The photograph in the centre of the shelf above his desk is of AMY, his wife in later years. At the age of eleven, while sleeping with his mother in her bed, Johnnie feels her naked breast. From then when he looks at a woman, her breasts catch his attention. As he grows older, the more they jut, the more they affect him. With Anna he has free and easy access to their firmness, and she enjoys the way he fondles them.

Penny’s are slightly on the small size, but they are taut and peep out, which stimulates him to make love to her on the first day they meet at Rhodes. Stephanie’s gestures, during her lectures, push her tight breasts to the fore, which cause Johnnie, as he watches and listens, to drool. Doris’ breasts aren’t unusual and don’t seize his attention.

However, that she, a beautiful woman, is denied sex arouses his sympathy, which turns into love. Amy’s don’t matter all that much, because he sees her, not as a woman to excite him physically but as a wife in the true sense of the word. June gleefully admits she has two boob jobs. Hers are tantalizing and enticing.Early in his Honor’s year, Johnnie makes a pass at Stephanie, the wife of a frail professor. Their romantic attachment lasts until the end of the academic year when he finds employment with a bank. After her husband’s death, believing that Stephanie desires to marry him, Johnnie applies for a transfer to Johannesburg where he works for a number of years.Returning to Cape Town, he has an affair with a dress designer who convinces him to open a boutique for ladies’ high fashion, and teaches him how to run the business.

When she catches him making love to the saleslady, she resigns.Anna, with whom he sleeps in his matric year, is his original sex-teacher. He can’t believe that, young as he is, he’s bedded two married women, Anna and Stephanie. On engaging an employee, he tells her that it is a condition of employment, whether she’s married or not, to sleep with him. After a client enters the fitting-room, he assesses the gown and makes sure it fits well. If her breasts attract him, he makes love to her as well on the couch that is placed close by.Regularly Johnnie gazes at the photographs, always first at their breasts, of the women in his life:Anna, with whom he has no further relationship after he leaves for Rhodes.Penny contracts cancer.

He encourages her to continue her studies, and wonders whether he’ll ever survive her death! When Doris is too depressed to allow him sex, he sleeps with Alice who tells Thomas, who isn’t as brain-dead as he seems, and croaks the name, Johnnie, to Doris seconds before his death, whereupon she takes her life.

Johnnie mourns her passing.Maybe because he’s already middle-aged and doubtful of his continuing success with women with inviting breasts, Johnnie’s feelings for the much-younger June become very tender, and he promises to help her financially, especially as she is suicidal because of her penury.

She lets him to sleep with her. Later, as she can’t allow herself to be deemed a kept woman in her own eyes, she prohibits sex, even smooching, and maintains they should be friends and friends shouldn’t become lovers. Johnnie is disappointed but can’t give her up. However, whenever she feels horny, she throws herself at him.
